Description:
Presented by Daniel Palac, PH.D. and Zdravko Salipur, PH.D.
This presentation provides an overview of how human factors and biomechanics principles are used to evaluate incidents across the transportation industry.
Dr. Palac highlights key human factors concepts, including perception, reaction, time, visibility, attention, warnings, and decision-making in complex environments, while Dr. Salipur explains how physical forces, body motion, and injury mechanisms are analyzed to assess whether reported injuries are consistent with the dynamics of an event.
Using practical examples, the presentation demonstrates how these disciplines help clarify issues of causation, foreseeability, and reasonable safety practices. Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of how biomechanical and human factors analyses can inform case strategy and enhance the effective presentation of technical evidence in transportation-related matters.
DANIEL PALAC, PH.D.
Dr. Palac applies his expertise to investigating human factors in user–product interaction, including the development and evaluation of warnings and safety information. His work spans a broad range of incident types, such as motor vehicle accidents, industrial and workplace incidents, and slips, trips, and falls. He brings extensive experience in product safety, encompassing both proactive pre-market evaluations and risk assessments and reactive investigations of incidents and product recalls. Dr. Palac has presented his findings to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in the context of product recall efforts.
With nearly a decade of experience analyzing consumer products, Dr. Palac has evaluated a wide variety of items, including children’s toys, household goods, appliances, and sporting equipment. He has conducted numerous user studies in the context of product safety investigations, examining both qualitative and quantitative aspects of a user’s experience. His analyses frequently incorporate national and international standards, such as those published by ANSI and ISO, to inform human factors evaluations. Dr. Palac earned his Bachelor of Science and master’s degrees in psychology and his doctorate in biobehavioral kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
ZDRAVKO SALIPUR, PH.D.
Dr. Zdravko Salipur, a mechanical engineer by training, has over two decades of research experience and 13+ years of forensic experience. Dr. Salipur’s forensic experience specializes in biomechanics and injury causation, accident reconstruction, and human factors issues. He works on product liability, premises liability, transportation, and intellectual property-related matters. With a profound scientific background and experience in highly litigated files, Dr. Salipur serves a wide variety of clients throughout the country and a multitude of industries.
