What Does a Psychiatrist Do for Your Case?
Understanding Mental Health Evidence in Litigation

Presented by Michael B. Kim, DO – Psychiatrist

Key Takeaways

1.    How Psychiatrists Evaluate Emotional Distress
Understanding the difference between normal stress and psychological symptoms leading to diagnosable mental health conditions. How impairment is assessed and why it is essential to an accurate diagnosis.

2.    What Psychiatrists Look for in the Records
The clinical markers, documentation patterns, and inconsistencies psychiatrists uncover when determining whether a diagnosis is supported.

3.    How Attorneys Can Use Psychiatric Experts More Effectively
Practical guidance on the questions to ask, materials to provide, and issues psychiatrists can meaningfully address in litigation.

Dr. Michael Kim is a board-certified psychiatrist who serves as Senior Psychiatrist to the Wing assets for the Navy’s Pacific Northwest Region, where he provides leadership oversight on mental health matters affecting service members and consults with operational commands on psychological health and resources.

In his clinical work, Dr. Kim performs psychiatric evaluations that involve detailed review of medical and mental health records along with interviews to determine diagnosis, duty status, disability eligibility, and ongoing impairment. His experience includes evaluating conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and adjustment disorders, and addressing issues of diagnosis, causation, and treatment.
