Chief Public Defender
The Kitsap County Office of Public Defense is staffed with outstanding attorneys dedicated to providing very high quality representation to individuals charged with felony crimes.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Chief Public Defender, Attorney 4 to join our team. The incumbent works to promote the overall goals of effective representation for indigent defendants by preparing and trying complex felony cases and managing appeals to the Washington State Court of Appeals or Supreme Court. The incumbent has responsibility for unit supervision and/or assignment of complex felony/criminal cases and work assignments that call for greater knowledge, judgment, discretion, decision-making and understanding of the casework.
The ideal candidate will have advanced knowledge of adult and juvenile criminal laws of the State of Washington, and the Washington and United States Constitutions. Our new team member will understand the Rules of Court, including evidence rules, criminal rules and rules of professional conduct as well as advanced techniques of preparation of criminal cases, including expert witness and forensic evidence issues.
Juris Doctorate from a recognized and accredited law school; AND,
Ten years of criminal trial work experience including one year supervisory or lead experience; AND,
An active member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association.

Criminal Conviction Standards:
The successful incumbent will or may have unsupervised access to children under 18 years of age, a vulnerable adult, or a vulnerable person, or access to a secured/confidential facility or computer system(s). As a result, Kitsap County will be conducting an extensive criminal background check by law enforcement agencies, which will include fingerprinting.
