Zoom Jury Trials From the Judge’s Perspective

Join King County Superior Court Judges David Keenan and Matthew Williams for a discussion
about all-Zoom jury trials, from pretrial conference to verdict, including jury selection using electronic questionnaires and Zoom, electronic evidence handling, opening jury instructions when the jurors are all on Zoom, handling issues outside the presence of the jury, dealing with juror questions for witnesses, troubleshooting issues such as a juror becoming disconnected, questions and concerns about jurors being at home, closing instructions, and deliberations on Zoom.

Please join us on Feb. 4 for our Zoom Trial Successes Lunch & Learn from the litigator perspective.

Judge David Keenan
Judge Keenan came to the King County Superior Court bench in 2017 after working in securities litigation at a global law firm.  Before becoming a lawyer, Judge Keenan spent nearly 15 years in federal law enforcement, earning his law degree at night while working full-time.  Judge Keenan is a member of the Board for Judicial Administration’s Court Recovery Task Force Remote Trials Work Group, and has presented with many of his excellent King County Superior Court colleagues on remote trial practices.

Judge Matthew Williams
Prior to serving on the Superior Court, Judge Williams served six years as a District Court Judge in King County, Washington. He began his legal career with the Attorneys General of Nebraska, Iowa, and Washington State. He handled death penalty and criminal appeals matters as well as complex commercial and tax litigation. Subsequently, he supervised Federal drug, weapons, and aviation enforcement. He served as a Supervising Assistant City Attorney for the City of Seattle’s major litigation unit and as the Managing Attorney of a large law office based in Tacoma, Washington. He also served as a General Manager with a national insurance carrier where he implemented best practices and data driven decision making while managing multiple business units across the nation.
