The difference between a person with an opinion and a forensic expert is having data to support their opinion.
This presentation explores how testing and use of modern data acquisition tools enhance forensics investigations. By presenting case studies, we will demonstrate the application of sensor-based measurements (such as thermocouples, strain gauges, and pressure transducers), 3D scanning technologies (such as Matterport, FARO LiDAR, and structured blue light scanner), and computational methods like Finite Element Analysis (FEA) by providing factual, applicable data to support expert opinions.
Attendees will gain insight into how testing and data support expert conclusions, strengthens claims, and clarifies complex technical issues for a non-technical audience in a claims or litigation setting. We will provide a brief overview of how these tools function, and how they are used to collect, analyze, and visualize data to support expert findings.
Tommy Halim is a Mechanical Engineer specializing in failure investigation, analysis, and laboratory and field testing of materials and mechanical systems. He provides technical support, litigation support, and expert analyses to law firms, insurance companies, and other industries. He employs forensic analysis to determine the root cause and failure modes ranging from mechanical systems to plumbing systems, including water losses involving installation errors and manufacturing defects. His mechanical system failure casework has included the evaluation of heavy machinery, damage to industrial equipment and property, and personal injury cases.
Additionally, Tommy applies various 3D scanning technologies for scene and evidence preservation, computational modeling, and dimensional analysis. He is an operator of the FARO 3D Laser Scanner, ATOS Core structured light scanner, and Matterport 3D camera. He uses these technologies to capture accurate dimensional data for detailed computational analyses and generate visual aids for legal proceedings. Furthermore, he has experience with computer-aided stress modeling, heat transfer, and fluid flow.
