In this course, participants will learn how chemical compositions in building materials affect their functions and how modern chemical analysis can determine the root cause when they fail. The course will introduce participants to the nomenclature and basics of the chemicals used in modern building materials. Case studies will show how chemistry is used to identify types of failure issues, as well as the analytical tools used to determine causation of the failure.
At the end of the course, participants will have obtained an understanding of how highly engineered, modern building materials are dependent upon chemistry to make them operate properly, and how deviations in those chemical components can adversely affect the performance of these materials in their intended function.
Presented by Jason Babcock, Ph.D.
Jason Babcock, Ph.D., is the director of the chemistry group at ESi.
Jason has formal training in chemistry, physics, mathematics, and materials property analysis. Throughout his career, he has specialized in the role that materials contribute to the limitations and failures of products and systems.
He has experience performing a broad range of tests to determine the strength and physical, chemical, and wear properties of metals, ceramics, composites, and plastics. He provides practical and comprehensive testing that is independent and unbiased.
Jason has substantial experience in a variety of materials, corrosion, measurement instrumentation, materials testing, intellectual property litigation, processing and processing equipment, R&D practices, and project management.
Jason has a broad general chemistry knowledge that is invaluable to understanding the interaction of materials on a molecular level. He has extensive experience designing and building experimental apparatus and performing analytical testing, interpreting the results, and providing detailed reports summarizing the findings.
Jason is the author of over forty technical papers and holds five patents.
