Presented by Felix Touza, PE

This educational presentation uses the widespread damages caused by the cold weather event of January 2024 as a backdrop to give attorneys a basic knowledge of the science related to pipe freezing and bursting. Attendees will gain an understanding of how construction and operation contribute to the freezing of water piping and identify the subrogation potential of damage claims. We will present the principles of water freezing in pipes and how the installation and construction interface contribute to a freezing event. We will then link these issues to subrogation.

Felix Touza is a mechanical engineer with over 30 years of experience in the design, inspection, and failure analysis of mechanical building systems, including air conditioning, heating and ventilation, plumbing, and process piping. He is a registered professional engineer in 10 states and an ICC-certified Commercial Plumbing Inspector and Mechanical Plans Examiner.
