Vessel sinkings and capsizings are often sudden, tragic events shrouded in mystery due to the disappearance of collectible factual evidence and limited witnesses.  The addition of other factors like crew and passenger fatalities tend to increase the complexity, pressure, and stress on investigators and attorneys.  This program will discuss the role of an experienced forensic naval architect or forensic marine engineer in a reverse engineering process utilized to understand the mechanism of a marine casualty with limited evidence.  Several investigations conducted personally by the speaker will be discussed including the tragic loss of the SS EL FARO on October 1, 2015, with the loss of 33 lives.

Katie Matison is a shareholder at Lane Powell PC in the Seattle office. Katie is the Chair of the firm’s Transportation Industry  Practice, handling both litigation and transactional matters.  She also handles insurance coverage disputes and defense cases for the London Insurance Market.  Katie is an experienced trial lawyer and spent 6 years as a felony prosecutor early in her career.  Katie has a J.D. and LL.M. in Admiralty, with distinction, from Tulane University School of Law.
