Statistics show that dog bites are a common cause of Emergency Room visits and subsequent treatment. One in five bites will become infected. Most bites come from larger breeds, especially those with a history of training to protect the owners.

Injuries include puncture wounds, lacerations and tissue tears. The most difficult injuries to deal with are avulsions where tissues are torn away from the body. It is rare that these can be grafted back successfully at the time of injury.

As these injuries heal interventions to correct the appearance or function in the victim are most often performed by Plastic Surgeons. The value of a scar is calculated by adding the total costs of the necessary reconstructive surgeries needed to restore normal appearance and function.

Even with the best surgical results and fading over time a scar never disappears and there is always some degree of disfigurement. Claim closure after final healing is often delayed in children to allow for changes with growth. In adults closure can occur at the one year interval.
