On June 4, 2025, legal professionals, advocates, and community leaders gathered at K&L Gates in Seattle for the Foundation for Washington State Courts (FWSC) Annual Reception. This event served as both a fundraiser and a platform to discuss the pressing issue of courthouse safety, an escalating concern in Washington’s judicial system.

Urgent Security Concerns in Washington’s Courts
Washington State ranks 50th in state funding for trial courts, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics—an alarming reality that has left many courthouses without basic security measures such as metal detectors, security cameras, and active shooter training. The FWSC, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (founded jointly by WDTL and WSAJ), is committed to bridging this gap by providing grants to courts in need.

During the reception, King County Superior Court Judge Andrea Robertson addressed the personal safety risks faced by judges, highlighting the alarming rise in threats and attacks against judicial officials. She underscored the critical need for enhanced security protocols, stressing that protecting those who uphold justice is foundational to a fair legal system.

Judge Sean O’Donnell also spoke at the event, focusing on the continuing support for funding deputy sheriffs to patrol the 3rd Avenue entrance of the King County Courthouse in Seattle. His remarks emphasized that ensuring safe access to courthouses is not just about security—it’s about maintaining public trust in the judicial process. He thanked the Foundation for its support last year during the King County Council Budget process and reminded us to be ready to help again this year in late August/September.

Community Engagement and Support
The reception provided a vital opportunity for legal professionals, attorneys, and supporting vendors—including mediators, court reporters, and expert services—to contribute to this mission. Over the past five years, FWSC has prioritized courthouse security, ensuring that Washington’s courts remain safe and accessible for all.
FWSC President Roy Umlauf (WDTL past president) thanked attendees for their generous donations. Roy encouraged attendees to donate and advocate for stronger security measures, with contributions directly funding essential upgrades such as security personnel, surveillance systems, and protective training.

Moving Forward
The message is clear- justice cannot thrive without security. The FWSC continues to advocate for stronger funding, safer courthouses, and a resilient judicial system. Events like this reception serve as a powerful reminder that protecting the integrity of Washington’s courts requires collaborative action.

For those who wish to support this mission, donations can be made through the FWSC website, www.fwacourts.org or send a check payable to the Foundation for Washington State Courts (TIN 91-1747158) as follows:
